4 Reasons Why Windows Vista Is Just Not Worth It
As you all may have heard, Microsoft has released Windows Vista to manufacturing yesterday. A momentous event? Well that just depends on who you ask, and if the person is myself then you are going to get the following four reasons why I personally would not even bother with Windows Vista.
1. No new features or speed boost – No kidding, it’s true! Windows Vista won’t run Microsoft Word any faster, won’t make your presentations look any better, and if my own experience is any indication then Vista is not going to make managing your PC any easier either. If Microsoft sticks to their new anti-piracy plan then corporations will be having to setup whole new license management systems to deal with Vista. To make matters even worse this *new* version of Windows is really just the Windows Server 2003 kernel in colorful clothing with some snazzy new mini-applications. Microsoft provided these programs in the “Ultimate” version of Vista as a weak attempt to compete with Apple’s iLife software suite. Additionally, my own informal tests on my Macbook Pro seem to indicate that Vista upgrades will likely run existing applications slower than XP for many folks forcing the purchase of new hardware just to “keep up”. Bottom line; Vista does not add any substantial new features for new or existing Windows users and may even be a significant reduction in speed for some users who dare to upgrade from XP on today’s hardware.
2. The new interface just gets in the way – Go ahead, try it out at your local computer store (demos should be available soon). One of the first things you are going to notice is the new interface which is a major case for the bifocal lens thanks to the excessive use of transparency. Unnecessary eye candy is everywhere, and seems to not add or enhance any features that might make users more productive. No well thought out GUI tricks like OSX’s expose here, just pure bling that quickly becomes annoying on all but the fastest PCs. The bottom line; Windows Vista does not bring anything new to the table other than more gizmo-style features that only serve to get in your way when you are trying to actually get some work done.
3. Security will still be a major problem – Since Microsoft decided not to build Windows Vista on the longhorn kernel (which was rumored to be a complete rewrite, or close to it) they ended up leaving many of the known problem areas of Windows XP (and other previous versions) still in place. In an attempt to address this problem of legacy code support they have tacked on a layer which is supposed to protect the system from malware and viruses. This layer is visible to the user in the form of dialog boxes that pop up every time you require “administrator” or direct access to system resources, something that seems far too common on the Windows platform. What does this mean for most users? More dialog boxes for users to mindlessly click “Ok” to without even bothering to read the message. Bottom line; constantly annoying pop-ups intending to improve security will actually result in even greater problems as users begin to blindly click “Ok” even more than they already do now.
4. The alternatives are so much better – I know what you are thinking, here comes the Linux or Mac OSX vs. Windows argument. Well you’re wrong! Right now the best alternative to Windows Vista is its predecessor Windows XP. The reality is that you can do everything promised by Windows Vista in Windows XP today with less hassle and in most cases faster than you could in Windows Vista on the same hardware. If you already use Linux or Mac OSX then Vista is not going to impress you anyway so don’t even bother taking a look.
Well that’s enough for now, look for me to post a nice (or not) mini-review of Windows Vista Ultimate Edition soon which will discuss some of the above mentioned issue in much greater detail.

Why Vista Isn’t Worth It…
This entry at Daily Techno-Babble explains in four very convincing points why you shouldn’t update to Windows Vista.
……
1. No new features
Are you high?
most of the feature in Vista are already present in Linux for free!
keep clicking “ok” everyware without being more secure
keep giving out your money to M$
keep upgrading your hardware and hence harm the enviroment for nothing
if this makes you fell to the edge of “innovation” you should look yourself in a mirror and you’ll see Dikika Australopithecus
Actually there is another big reason: that it will in most cases require upgraded hardware.
see how linux looks like with opengl effects
yeah, no new features, uh, except maybe that DX10 thingie, and that does not matter at ALL and well, i could run word on a 200 mhz processor and wind 95 anyway so there’s no need for upgrade.
or whatever.
One of the main advantages of Vista is 64 bit support. Finally, there won’t be 4GB limit for applications, which is very important for software like Adobe Photoshop, if you work with large images.
Actually, the only two things that are stopping me from switching to Linux are 1) no photoshop 2) no good MS office alternative. Open Office sucks big time, it’s only suitable for editing simple documents. GIMP sucks too, mostly for no 16-bit support and no good color management.
“Since Microsoft decided not to build Windows Vista on the longhorn kernel”
Then what have they been doing for 5 years? The only true hope for Microsoft is a complete rewrite away from the Registry architecture. Object to object is more streamline and secure than handing out .dlls like candy on Halloween. I was hoping they would evolve away from what is basically a late 80s os core and move into something modern, like the longhorn kernel.
As long as they are stuck in the quigmire of a registry os, they will slowlly wither and die. Evolve damn you! EVOLVE!
I have a picture of in my mind of 5 years of meeting just to actually make the decision not to use Longhorn. My heart goes out to those developers, poor rat bastards.
PC-BSD : A Linux Alternative for The Rest Of Us
(More friendly, & faster than most Linux on the same hardware).
not quite there yet, but shaping up nicely.
Grammar!
You wrote “Right now the best alternative to Windows Vista is it’s predecessor Windows XP.”
No, you should have written
‘Its predecessor’
otherwise what you have written is in effect – ‘it is predecessor Window XP.’ which we’ll all agree is meaningless.
Possession is assumed when you use ‘its’. You mark the exception when you want to abbreviate ‘it is’ and then you use an apostrophe.
Even experienced writers seem to get this wrong.
I will buy a mac next year. I’ve used Windows for a long time but I think I need something less complex and something where I can work more productive. Correct me if I am wrong but I think it’s a better alternative. I think if Apple publishes their OSX as an independend Software – things would change rapidly for Microsoft. But they won’t do it due to perfectly adjusted hardware.

One strong reason in favor of Apple keeping OSX off of non-Apple hardware is the whole stability factor. I would imagine the work required to maintain a code base for generic PCs might be too much for a company the size of Apple. I do however absolutely love my Macbook Pro and OSX but it does have some limitations in most office environments (but that is starting to change!).
Mac fag doesn’t like Vista, more at 11.
I tried Vista in its early days and I tried it again last night.
My opinion does not change and I agree Vista is simply Win2k3 Skinned up. Of course if you wanna go into details there are lots of other impovements.
Get a mac people for your everyday use, even if like me, your home server is windows server 2003.
Now that MacBooks come with the new C2D processors(no real improvement from the CD) you will definitely enjoy using your computer and your work will always be safe
64bit?
You want 64 bit? Use XP 64 bit then.
haha XP 64 bit. it’s not true 64 bit almost no app is 64 bit enabled on windows.
Linux? most app use 64 bit instruction set
Don’t forget DirectX 10, which will pretty much revolutionize PC graphics. DX10 is the only reason I’m interested in Vista, and I think many gamers feel the same way. Just look at Crysis and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
Before you totally bash microsoft don’t forget to examine why people don’t use linux or apple for that matter on a large scale:
Why Open Source Software Sucks
Ye, its all about the games. Only thing that keeps us on windows anyway. Make games for linux and i’ll switch.
Robert (switching to a Mac),
I did and only use windows and family members ask me to fix it. Mac works a little different – so don’t try to do things you would do it in windows. Try doing things you want to do!!
Also, “I think if Apple publishes their OSX as an independend Software – things would change rapidly for Microsoft. But they won’t do it due to perfectly adjusted hardware.” – Apple is a hardware company. They make very little, maybe even lose money, on software. That is why you will not see them open-source their code and have added security (I am assuming it is a hardware dependent thing) to not let it port easily.
bulshit, the Mac will soon be nothing as it was 10 years ago
“One of the first things you are going to notice is the new interface which is … the excessive use of transparency.”
And OS X doesn’t use transparency? That’s one of the first things I noticed about OS X when it first came out. Maybe the folks at MS might have gone a bit overboard with it in Vista, but like in OS X, at least you can adjust it or even disable it entirely if you think it’s too distracting. And if your machine seems to be running slower after upgrading to Vista, try turning off some of the fancy stuff that’s going on in the front end; you’d be surprised at how that helps speed things up.
To put my comments into perspective, I’m a fan of both Windows and Mac (with leanings toward the Mac). Each has its own pros and cons; figure out what you want to use it for, weigh the options, and pick accordingly.
Actually Vista will be able to run some programs faster. It uses physical memory much more effiecently, automatically prediciting and loading memory pages that you may need when the hard drive is idle.
XP left a lot of physical memory idle when a program closed. This is why it can take a long time to get back up to full speed if a virus scanner runs during your lunch break.
You’ve missed the point completely. The number one reason for getting one, the number one reason that trumps all your lame reasons, is that the world is switching to 64-bit processing. So unless you want to shell out cash for the XP upgrade, you might as well switch up to Vista.
To Alleagra – get over yourself. People make grammar errors all the time. Guess if we ever looked at your college papers (or did you go?) we wouldn’t find ONE grammatical error?
PC-BSD is BSD in drag
nice for people who are new and wanting to try the *NIX way of life
but want an easy time to install there needed programs
but vista need a F**K load of memory nice fast CPU to load the OS
and the start menu interface
OMFG!
what are they on when they did that
its EVIL! to try and find your way around the menus i like to know where i came from to get where i am
only played with beta copy of the OS
will wait and see how its goes
“1. No new features
Are you high?”
On Correctness!…
Have you even used Vista? There are plenty of reasons not to upgrade, but you completely failed to name one. Not only that but you showed that you are just about completely ignorant of anything Vista can do. You even mention that Vista doesn’t have the Longhorn kernel “(which was rumored to be a complete rewrite, or close to it)” but you show that you don’t know jack about Longhorn which is going to be the NT6.x kernel. Vista is NT6. Neither of them are a complete rewrite. Blackcomb (now known as Vienna) is the complete re-write of the Windows Kernel and it won’t be here until 2012 (2030 after the standard delays)
Everyone loves to point out the Microsoft FUD out there, and they are usually justified in doing so. You just did the same thing. Congratulations, you’re no better than Microsoft.
No new features? That must be the most retarded review of Vista I’ve ever seen. Here check out this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Features_new_to_Windows_Vista
There are about 40 pages of descriptions of new features (and that covers only the more important ones).
There are changes and new features from the memory manager and process scheduling all the way to GUI (Aero). There isn’t a single area that doesn’t have changes or new features.
I really get pissed off when some proclaimed tech experts with the brain capacity of chipmunk start reviewing operating systems.
I’m sorry, but I have a hard time reading a Vista article on a blog that has a section devoted to Mac tips and not think it is highly biased. Before you think I’m a Microsoft fanboi, know that I have PC’s and a Mac at home.
I wouldn’t have posted this, but your first bullet point says it all. If you don’t think there are any new features in Vista, you must have had a little too much of the Steve Jobs Kool-Aid.
You’re very misinformed about new features. For example …
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Features_new_to_windows_vista
You guys are all so lame. It doesn’t MATTER what you think or say about Vista, it’s still going to make billions and billions of dollars, so HAH. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
1. Stupid and ignorant
2. Ignorant
3. Ignorant
4. Plain lame
You, my friend, are spreading FUD
There are plenty of new features to Vista, but with that there are plenty of bugs to exploit! :O
Vista is based on the XP kernel???? XP is a better alternative to Vista??? WOW!! I have used Macs and Linux in grad school and I do know some of the things in Vista. Reading pages like this, gives a lot more fuel to the newspaper’s arguments on blogs being a source of unverified, jingoisitic hot air.
Windows Vista is based off of Windows 2003 Server source code.
Echostorm: Oh be quiet, gamerboy.
Yet again Microsoft astound the computer world with more and more crap.
Windows Vista is a terrible clone of Mac OS X, and Apple have all the “new” features of Vista….three years ago!
A point of clarification….my critical view regarding Vista “features” really was to draw attention to the fact that there are virtually no new *useful* features that might entice mainstream users to upgrade. I have no illusions that gamers and hard core Windows power users will flock to Vista in droves but the story for the rest of us might be significantly less enthusiastic.
all the same. even if power users and gamers are the first ones to use it, others will soon follow. thats how things always work. but to blatantly lie about vista giving nothing better than xp is rather ignorant. using a flash drive as system ram would help many users. using a video card as a general purpose processor is a neat idea that will only get better with time. more stuff like built in dvd burner, built in backup software, and countless numbers of security updates. then my personal favorite, a personal bencharking suite that allows users to bench it at first install and help the user detect anything keeping it from fresh install performance, such as slow startup apps, lagging services and the like. it not only tells what is going wrong, but gives solutions for such problems. sure, it may not sound like much, but thats the idea. nothing in an operating system should be noticable, because if it is, then it wasnt done very well.
lets see, what else is neat and useful.
speech recognition, which may eliminate the need for a m/k
easier install
better wifi networking
using spare ram on networked pc’s
improved task scheduler
90% people always criticise microsoft. 90% people always use windows.85% people use internet explorer.Whether it is ignorance of users or arrogance of technocrats? I am unable to understand.
The most common home user of XP will not upgrade to Vista. This was true of Windows 95/98/MP also. The typical home user will be happy with XP until they buy a new computer that will come pre-installed with Vista.
Gamers will upgrade to Vista for DX10.
Developers will upgrade at least one computer to ensure compatibility, or possibly just run it in virtual PC (which still require a license).
Corporations will most like take 1-2 years to even start to think about upgrading to Vista as most corporations move slow and if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
You claim “no new *useful* features that might entice mainstream users to upgrade” but there doesn’t really need to be, and I am sure M$ isn’t really expecting there to be. Its just the next in a never ending incremental improvement in the line.
Some very good points made here, but let us remember the licensing issues too!
I gave you a linkback!
HUN
you are an ass monkey go dl the beta and learn something then write ur article
$399 for eye candy.
Gives you more hassle, probably more viruses, definitely more expense of managing licenses etc. and probably less resources to run YOUR software as it runs more of its own, so…
Microsoft delivers great value yet again. What is the world doing?! Time to tell people that the Emperor has no clothes.
I’m testing Leopard at the moment, and even though there doesn’t seem to be that much difference between it and Tiger, it does work.
I love the Mac OS, it does what I’d expect it to when I want, not throw all kinds of errors and unwated screens at any given moment. Long live Apple!
Have to agree, i’d stick to Windows XP for client machines and upgrade the server ones.
Fact is as good as Microsoft is, they don’t do it on performance. We had a guy in from Documentum (big CMS) and he bluntly told us the NT kernel can’t handle massive data loads and if we were to do such things he’d advise us to run it on a Linux box.
Proof indeed.
I’ll stick to the MAC for home use, and if eventually Apple die out i’ll switch to Ubuntu Linux.

blah blah blah
I swear, Microsoft haters are even more annoying than the Microsoft lovers.
have u even tried the freakin beta u asscheese, it fucking owns…
1) Get a faster compuuuuuuuuter
2) Learn to use a computer
3) Use third party security
4) “Linux is a better alternative”… i’m not even going to start.
Personally, I think you just have nothing better to do than bitch about microsoft… (one of the most succesful companies on the planet, wonder why? guess with all the crappy software they bring out.. yep that must be it)
Why do people use Vista’s glitz against it? Just like in Windows XP, the amount of resources you want to devote to how pretty it looks can be changed by modifying which effects are and aren’t used in the GUI If you want the Windows Classic look and don’t care for any of the GUI, do that. If you want all of them, you can do that. If you want the overall Vista look but don’t want to use too many resources, you can disable things such as transparency. I can’t get mad at MS for making it’s operating system look pretty. If it looked the same as Windows XP, I’m 99% sure someone would be complaining that OS X looked way better.
I like glitz, myself. A pretty OS makes me more enthusiastic about using it, and I think Aero is rather functional.
osx for teh win! woot!
Have you had a lobotomy recently? Maybe just some serious brain surgery?
I’ve use Linux, Windows and dabbled in Macs and I can promise you that most people will want Vista.
Besides all the tech improvements, the appearance of the thing is better than XP.
Most people won’t care about a few inconvenient positioning guidelines, even if they are unspoken.
Windows might have new features so old no self-respecting technocrat cares about, but it is still the most used OS on the computational arena.
Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words can’t harm me…
I’ll use it as my main OS as soon as possible. Replacing XP as fast as I can.
Trust me on this! XP will start to look unbelievably heavy if you use Vista for a month. When its in working order that is.
Beta drivers, beta os, beta everything doesn’t count. Just make for poor performance.
I remember switching to XP from 2000 and performance was a reason.
So will it be with Vista.
Nobody likes the medicine, but you usually need it.
Your analyse is useless dude
I switched my primary desktop from Windows Xp to Kubuntu 6.06 about 3 months ago. I have loved it and never looked back. i upgraded to edgy 6.10 last week with no major issues and would’nt dream of returning to the land of windows.
You’re quite right about Vista’s “security improvements”… they’re pretty weak. I’m glad I don’t make a living working tech support!
Did anyone say anything about all the restrictions that are in place in Vista? Copy protection and not being able to transfer videos or music to another machine and expect it to play? This system is made for the music and video industry not for the regular user that loves videos and music. To me its like compairing Win98 to WinME.. Also just another attempt to take a persons money for what should be included in regular updates to XP.
I think you were right on with this analysis of Vista but its not going to change anyones decision on whether to upgrade or not.
Today the benefits seem meaningless to you but the majority of windows users are always wanting to upgrade to the latest and greatest. The new Vista will prevail over XP just because its the latest release of Windows and thats what the majority of people are looking for (those that can afford it). I remember when Windows ME came out. Everyone rushed out to get it and it turned out to just be more of a service pack upgrade of Windows 98. There were more bugs in it than the movies Antz.
Vista, Mac, Linux they are all the same, they allow users to actually operate the computer through a GUI.
All the new OSes are very showey because that is what impresses people. It is like two almost identical cars, one is all waxed and buff, the other one was crapped on by a flock of seagulls. Which car will you choose? I personally do not like all these graphics, they slow down my laptop and drain the battery. While it is true you can disable all the glitz, the glitz is what all users notice when they use the OS. If its gone, whats the point of even upgrading? For most users there would be no need to upgrade to Vista because once they upgrade they will have to buy a new graphics card to use the new Aero features, and if they turn it off(Aero) then the OS becomes like any other OS. The AVERAGE user will not notice anything different. Sure there are many new features implemented into it, but how many of those features do you actually use? You probably use 5 a day with the rest just sitting on your start menu. You can argue about the new security fixes; but a lot of that can be prevented if you just change your habits a little. Disable activex, use FF, don’t start clicking on random links downloading stuff, firewall. There are many of these simple solutions to a bigger problem. I guess what I am trying to say is that the majority of the people out there do not care. I am pretty sure if your company upgrades to Vista, and you use it; you may or may not like it; but if asked to shell out $400 of your own money to upgrade. You will say NO!
Vista has one very important thing going for it. In the beta alone I noticed a 10% increase in speed of gameplay with higher graphics. Oblivion runs like a dream in Vista, XP not so much.
The gamers will be the first to benefit from Vista, and they will have the hardware to make Vista work. Vista is to be treated like any other Windows system, you get it, install it and then tweak the hell out of it, something you cannot do on a Mac, and requires actual commandline and more programming experience to do in Linux.
I dont program, I like jumping through hoops to get the system just the way I like it, I like backing up my system every few days just in case, I am a gamer, I am a Windows user.
NOT
DirectX 10 is enough to convince many to switch. But you can’t be worried about that since you are an Apple fanboy who is used to not being able to play games.
kthnxbai
One other thing I haven’t seen mentioned yet…. You are trying an early release… not sure if it is RC2, or what, but still, a “beta” of software, on a Mac, probably using Bootcamp. Have you attempted to run it on a beige box yet, natively? I have, and it is much faster then XP is on the same box. Also, while I am at it, they finally have decent, not great, but decent security. How can you say that isn’t a big improvement? How can you say that XP with its horrible security, and having to log in as an Admin if you want it to work, is better? At least with Vista, you can have an Admin account, and then use a “power user” style account, that doesn’t grant full rights…. hmm.. just like OS X and Linux… But hey… don’t look at that, just bitch about how much older stuff is better!
Wow. Well written, concise, and not partisan at all! This is truly a rarity when it comes to internet articles! And it convinced the heck out of me!

Well I agree with you. It may have “new” features, but nothing that would make me willing to shell out 400$
Wow. You’re an Idiot.
Okay, this guy is really not that bright, I will address his points one by one as i see the need too (Half are moronic, and half dumb-luck-correct), and I have only used Vista for about five minutes a few months ago.
“Windows Vista won’t run Microsoft Word any faster, won’t make your presentations look any better, and if my own experience is any indication then Vista is not going to make managing your PC any easier either.”
Well, I suppose that the faster new version of Word(2007) intended for Vista which is faster even on Beta for XP, and the new Powerpoint 2007 that is chock full of new features for styling and extremely more easy to use play not part in this. Because, well that would make his statement; dare I say it – wrong.
A few lines later he mentions the speed-existing hardware issue, and he is right, on existing hardware Vista will run less than optimally for most people, but on his Macbook it should be running crazy well. He claims it isn’t, I don’t buy it considering this guys skill for hyperbole.
“Since Microsoft decided not to build Windows Vista on the longhorn kernel (which was rumored to be a complete rewrite, or close to it) they ended up leaving many of the known problem areas of Windows XP (and other previous versions) still in place.”
Well, If i understand what he is saying here, he is wrong, very wrong. he is mentioning the kernel change when longhorn was dropped and Vista was restarted form the beginning. Longhorn was not a complete rewrite, it was based on XP, whereas Vista was based off of Windows 2003 Server Edition. As for existing bugs, well, I dunno what exactly he is trying to say, but I am sure Vista has its share of bugs – which has no correlation to the fact that they dropped Longhorn, as Longhorn would have had MORE XP legacy bugs.
Now two points I agree with him on.
1. More security warnings will most likely result in people being conditioned to blindly click OK, and this is bad for security, they can mess things up clicking ok to the wrong things, and they can also even allow foreign access to their computer accidentally. Making security a hassle is not good, it should go the other way, make it more invisible and background-based unless users go out of their way to alter settings.
2.He says “Right now the best alternative to Windows Vista is its predecessor Windows XP.” He is right, for the average user sticking with XP is better, Eye candy does few people much good, even the functional flip3D stuff is not that big a deal. XP is simpler and does all the things the everyday user will do in Vista, and you can save the 250 or so for Home Premium. (Cause Home Basic is really not equal to XP Home, it has every feature stripped, even ones XP Home had.) I however love Eye Candy, and I cannot wait to get Vista dual-booting alongside OS X Leopard on my soon to be had White Core 2 Duo Macbook.

Whether or not it’s worth $250+, how many of the people here will actually pay for Vista?
I know it will do well, as it will be shipped with new PC’s via OEM’s but how many people are actually going to go out to store and buy it.
That said, I saw another article that said that people who try to upgrade from XP are in for a nsaty surprise. Though it’s suprisingly useable, (even without Aero) on a low spec machine, it all depends where the bottlenecks are. Apparently 1Gb or RAM, is the minimum you can get away with.
This “RJ” guy has obviously never tried Vista.
Add this to the long list of reasons why Blogging is pretty much ruining the internet
Someone earlier in this comment section asked a very good question about what Microsoft has been doing the last 5 years while they were apparently ‘trying’ to get Vista out the door.
Microsoft is not THAT slow. No operating system creator is that slow.
They were waiting. Waiting for hardware DRM to catch up with them. IMHO.
Think about that!
(in the words of the now Defunct TechTV’s Eye Drops show).
Linkback article on my blog.
As an interesting aside, I decided to run Vista in Parallels also just to see how that would work out. All things considered it seems to run ok. Not fast, but enough to be useful if you needed to access something in a hurry. Of course none of the eye candy works but running natively (non-virtualized) was not really doing it for me anyway. One comment above did mention something else I noticed about Vista that I maybe should have mentioned, memory requirements. Vista does seem to be much more of pig on memory then I would expect. Since I am not one to judge performance based on how much free memory I see in task manager, I can’t say without some hard core testing (with a stopwatch) if the extra memory usage is the source of some of the speed issues I mentioned in the post…
New excellent features, taken directly from wikipedia:
Digital Rights Management
Microsoft is introducing a number of Digital Rights Management and content-protection features in Windows Vista, to help digital content providers, corporations, and end-users protect their data from being copied.
Thank god they protect my content from being copied…… Not to mention the poor corporations who can not defend themselves!
These 4 “reasons” are not only mostly incorrect, they are also one-sided. If you like the Macintosh so much, write about it. Not something you know nothing about.
The author is a fucking idiot, this article is an opinion of a mac/linux fan boy, with no actual facts or anything even loosely based on facts.
I’ve been using vista for some time now.
In my opinion it does look far better than xp but yes they did add to many visual enhancements and it is trying to mimic mac os in many ways.
That doesn’t make it worst or better. For a beta version it handles very good but doesn’t work for me. I don’t know it’s just too much. From the first moment I installed it felt so unfriendly too many things too many options and absolutely crazy amount of dialogs for a every move you make. I can understand that from a Microsoft point of view. Let’s face it windows is the dominant system and is the system with viruses and threats so it’s logical for the programmers to try to make it safer even if that means adding annoying extra features.
Anyway to summarize I just feel it’s a little over complicated for an operating system. And for the people who start saying this and that. This is just my opinion. I am user of windows and mac. I find both excellent tools with pros and cons. I don’t use linux at home cause I don’t want to look for a million packages before I can see a movie but I use linux at work cause nothing like a linux server.
Thanks
1. No new features or speed boost
Either you have never used vista or you are letting your biased love of apple get in the way. Vista is not just Server 2003 with colorful clothing. Its a rewrite from the kernel all the way to the gui. And who needs 64bit memory addressing allowing up to 16gb of ram? Nope, no good features in vista.
2. The new interface just gets in the way
Because Live window previews and the 3d like alt tab replacement isn’t productive. The new interface for windows explorer is a huge improvement over xp and is much more intuitive. If you would take the time to see vista for what it really is and stop putting it in the shaddow of osx, you would notice this.
3. Security will still be a major problem
Vista isn’t built on the longhorn kernel? Where do you get your information? Vista IS longhorn. Longhorn was the code name, and it is a rewritten kernal.
4. The alternatives are so much better
This is a very subjective point. Define better? Yeah, linux is a great alternative for running webservers but think about retraining your office staff to use it? oops total cost of ownership went up a good bit now didn’t it? I agree Windows XP is still a great operating system and I won’t be upgrading for a while, but vista brings a lot to the table.
In Closing,
You don’t know what you are talking about and are certainly not qualified enough to be doing a review of windows vista. You come of as just another ignorant mac fanboy trying to bash the new microsoft product so your precious osx looks better by comparison. You sir, are a moron.
Well, the one and the only grand reason why vista is going to be a bone in the throat is its mandatory driver signing. Bloodbath , this is what it will look like for 99% of software vendors, except… Microsoft, of coarse
Well, i wanted to comment on the false information provided in this blog, but i guess i can second Drew’s comments for the most part and give you a few keywords to search for in your spare time
1. Windows System Performance Ratings (WinSPRs)
2. Mandatory Integrity Control
3. Windows SuperFetch & ReadyBoost
4. Next Generation TCP/IP
As far as security is concerned, i gotta say that they are going in the right direction. The MIC and RPC controls will do wonders for an average PC. The outbound filtering in firewall, the Network Access Protection along with Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) are too significant to be ignored. SP2 brought peace to many average users and Vista in on pace to do more wonders in security. I am not saying that there won’t be any exploits for it, i am only indicating that the security architecture has a good foresight. The hackers (blackhats) along with the Security Research companies are having a go at cracking Vista as I write, hence the exploits are inevitable and if you live in the security world, you would know that its not a matter of how or if, its only a matter of when … for all things security.
We love bashing Windows or anything microsoft comes up with, actually anyone who likes to be called geek adopts this voluntary hate relationship with microsoft. To be honest, its pretty obvious when y’all bash MS just for the heck of it. To say that Vista doesn’t bring new features or security enhancements is outright ridiculous.
Perhaps you could have used your number 4 “The alternatives are so much better” as your number 1 and ended it there; your credibility as an author could have survived for a may be a lil’ longer.

Vista looks twice as fagy as OSX
Ha Ha!
You don’t like transparency? Turn it off.
I’m running Vista and Office 12 and it’s awesome. I remember jokers like you saying the same thing when XP came out.
Give it a few years and you’ll regret ever writing this.
I wonder, why most of my friends recently switched to Apple, with CoreDuo Intel Chips.
Internet and Office-Applications – okay.
But how about the Games? I still have my doubts….let’s see how long further…
[...] Because I write a blog, my opinions need no justification. You should base your life and your purchasing decisions around my extremely valuable, NASA-like accurate and self-justified rantings. If you were to ask me what I thought about Windows Vista, because your own opinions are worth less than hotdogs on a stick, I’m here to tell you Windows Vista blows. Just like what this guy, Robert Rittmuller, is telling everyone else. Let’s have a look at what Robert says. [...]
Every single point you make is provably wrong.
Chips, shoulder? Full of hate?
waw :O .. 1 reason because this article is not worth it …
oops sorry.. I don’t want to fall as deep as this guy is !
This is the most patetical article i’ve ever read! The only thing worth in this is the MacBook Pro laptop !… If you give it to me, i promise better use of it
>transparency?
It is translucency! If it were transparent you wouldn’t be able to see it. Now matter how “excessive”. Also, as pointed out, you can turmn it off. What a clueless dolt.
Hi, I accidentally had my colour settings for firefox as text colour: white. I couldn’t see the post. Fixing this would be great designing.
Notice something? All of the sites he says are “Intresting” include apple.com. Also, this is just another post by a mac fanboy. Want me to rebuke them all?
1) no new features or speedboost? What the hell? Are you crazy? What’s ReadyDrive? What’s ReadyBoost? I suppse that they aren’t “useful”…
2) If you don’t like the news interface, you know what you can do? switch back to Windows Classic. On the contrary, OSX’s dock get in MY way.
3) Security? What are you, high? Do you know what session 0 isolation is? do you know what adress abstraction layer randomization is? Do you know any of these, you idiot?
4) Alternatives? do you have any good programs that run nativley on OSX or Linux and was from a thrid party? Of course not.
Conclusion- another ignorant, and aggnorant, fanboy. You’re on a great way to journalism. Good Luck.
ReadyDrive? ReadyBoost? If these are supposed to make something faster in Vista then I guess it was so fast I never noticed. I am currently running all the usual applications such as Office and Photoshop and I have not noticed any major boost in speed from XP. In fact, in both native and virtualized installs of Vista I noticed slower performance in those applications (load times, task switching, etc). The difference was not huge but it was enough to draw my attention.
Oleg: Though I beg to differ about OpenOffice…
Photoshop and Microsoft Office can run fine in WINE with some tweaking.

There is one new feature. Or maybe you can say it’s an improved feature. And that is WGA and Validation. I think the WGA and Validation of much more feature rich in Vista. Heck they even added a Software Licensing service. MS must have spent hundreds of hours coding these improvements yet you fail to mention them. Vista now provides you the ability to check in with MS constantly so that your getting the Genuine Advantage. With XP your just not getting as much Genuine Advantage as you could be and that reason enough to upgrade to Vista. I really wish my car would incorporate a WGA feature to make sure I am using factory approved tires or that I am not using some sort of third party chip to increase the horse power or add gas mileage. I want my car to phone back to Toyota and inform them of this and be able to put my car into reduced functionality mode maybe making it so I can’t run the heat and prevent me from going over 25MPH. You guys need to get with the program and update to Vista as it is for your own good.

You’re an idiot!! There are plenty of new features and the gui is very cool. Performance is also a major improvement … was running WinXP on Dell Dimension 4600, it was pretty slow. Upgraded to 1.5GB memory and got new ATI Radeon X1600 512MB AGP video card, XP still slow. Installed Windows Vista on a new partion, it’s amazing how much faster, crisp, clear, etc. Vista is than XP. Get off your soapbox and get back to smoking whatever you were smoking when you wrote this article.
Hmmm, this guy worried me for a minute, before I realised how wrong he was…
Try it for yourselves people. Go on. No really…
XP was a real milestone.
Vista is another Windows ME filling in the gap while people upgrade their hardware.
The real deal will probably come a few years later. Microsoft have deemed it far too risky to release the real deal now because there won’t be enough users with adequate hardware to upgrade. They have hedged their bets on the likelihood that most PC’s that can run XP now can run basic Vista and will upgrade their hardware also at some point in time. Microsoft have done their homework and are only releasing an upgrade which XP users can make – a gap ( a Windows ME) until the next real new OS.
A completey re-written code with a new file system and many new and really useful features was put on hold when Microsoft did their homework and realized that if they released the new OS now many users would not be able to upgrade so they are cashing in on an ‘interim period’ when people are ‘in the process’ of thinking about upgrading their hardware and they know that will take a while so in the meantime are releasing WINDOWS ‘ME Vista’ to fill the gap and their pockets.
Folks, don’t have any doubt – Vista is an interim OS like ME and won’t be very popular like ME because it’s not any better than XP and will cost an upgrade for many so millions won’t touch it.
I was really looking forward to buying Vista but there’s just nothing but extra skins and icons in it and that’s not enough incentive to make me want to upgrade.
So whats the point for Windows Vista, heck 2 years from now there will be another version of Windows promising to be better but yet so far off. I am really thinking about switching to linix or Mac, sounds a whole lot easier and without less aggravation from Microsoft!!
I’ve been using VIsta Ultimate 64 bit for a few weeks now and I’ve come to the conclusion it is simply not worth what they are charging. The performance compared to XP is alot slower. Gaming performance is crap under vista with a combination of bad drivers which is Nvidia’s fault and microsofts due to the requirement that all drivers are given the the thumbs up by them due to the shitty DRM protection in Vista. The directx 9.0L performance is just pathetic compared to directx 9.0C on XP 10 to 20% lower performance depending on games. If you are a gamer stay well away from vista for now if you want reliability and performance XP is just great for the next few years.
The only reason Vista will sell is because of Direct 10 which according to the guy at I.D. Software could have easily been released for XP but Microsoft wanted it for Vista to entice people to buy the OS.
I use Linux and now Mac OSX along with XP and Vista and to be honest I find Mac OSX and Linux much more reliable the windows and the only reason I need windows is for gaming.
I have never seen SO MANY god damned shills in all my life! Half belligerently extol Windows Vista; half belligerently extol the MacIntosh. This is RIDICULOUS! Despite all that, the person at this site who eveluated Windows Vista is correct, although I have always liked both the IBM type PC and the MacIntosh. Whatever the case may be, those of you who said such nasty things about this man and to each other apparently have a really bad case of PMS, or, you ain’t getting enough booty calls. Regardless of how much you bitch or bad-mouth the guy who gave this eveluation and each other, the fact remains that what the guy at this site who evaluated Windows Vista says is true, and he is not alone. Like the man here who evaluated Windows Vista, the boys and girls at Cnet and ZDnet say the same thing; and I know they are far more qualified to say this than any of us. The one thing that they said that rings true is, WINDOWS VISTA GIVES YOU NOT ONE COMPELLING REASON TO UPGRADE TO IT FROM WINDOWS XP! Nada! None! It is a travesty that we not only have to shell out $160.00 to $400.00 in order to buy a version of Windows Vista, but it REALLY STINKS that many of us have to pay up to $200.00 more than this just to upgrade our computers so that they have enough RAM, etc just to run Windows Vista. Only an idiot would waste money like that over something that has nothing that would compel them to spend money like that. I don’t know about any of you, but I am not a rich fat cat who has money he can freely waste. So, if any of you do, go ahead and waste your money. I am not that stupid. And to the guy at this site who gave the avaluation of Windows Vista, GOOD JOB!
I loaded Windows Vista Ultimate on one of my newest PCs to see is it was an actual improvement over Windows XP et al. The 64 bit version was better looking, but it is totally disappointing ant not worth the pricetag. My printers do not work with it, at least for the time being. My wireless access point is not supported by it and the upgrade from Linksys did not work. My sound card is not supported by it and no upgrade for it aside from by a new compatible one. I have been moving to MAC for the past 6 months and I will continue to do so.
The Author is right in every letter. Went to Bestbuy to check Vista — it is SO slow even on good machines… XP is good enough for most of the stuff.
We had one of our older PC’s die, and we bought a new one with Vista. We hated it so much that we decided to buy XP for it and fresh install it, well guess what, when we went to buy XP it was explained to us that a new PC that runs Vista cannot have XP installed in it because the motherboard bios are different.
That was the last straw after a week of literally fighting with Vista, we returned the brand new computer that was a fine machine messed up by the Vista demon.
We looked and looked and finally found a new XP machine and bought it.
Vista has put such a bitter taste in my mouth that hell will freeze over before I buy anything at all with Vista on it, it is an evil OS, absolutely evil!!!
WINDOWS VISTA IS A NIGHTMARE!
NEWER ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER!
TRUST ME WHEN I SAY I REALLY KNOW MY WAY AROUND A COMPUTER.
USING 2 OF THE EXACT SAME BRAND NEW GATEWAY LAPTOPS FOR MY BUSINESS – (BOTH WITH IDENTICAL SPECS) ONE WITH WINDOWS AND THE OTHER VISTA, THE VISTA HAS MAJOR UNACCEPTABLE SOUND ISSUES, COMPATIBILITY PROBLEMS AND MANY OTHER ISSUES THAT THE WINDOWS XP LATOP DIDN’T.
VISTA IS A MAJOR SYSTEM HOG USING WAY TOO MUCH MEMORY TO RUN IT.
MAKING IT SLOWER THAN THE XP RIGHT OFF THE BAT.
NO LIE IT TOOK ME 48 HOURS JUST TO “SCAN” A FILE WITH VISTA THAT TOOK WINDOWS XP ONLY 8 HOURS. KEEP IN MIND BOTH LAPTOPS HAVE 2 GIGS OF RAM.
VISTA IS VERY CONFUSING.
TO GET TO CONTROL PANEL ICONS IN VISTA, IT TAKES 3 TIMES AS LONG AS XP HAVING TO CLICK THROUGH SO MANY PAGES TO GET TO WHERE YOU WANT TO GO. IT IS VERY ANNOYING AND TIME CONSUMING.
EVERY PROGRAM I INSTALLED HAD TO BE MADE COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS XP.
(IT WAS NOT FUN AT ALL)
I GOT ENDLESS SECURITY AND OTHER WARNING POP UPS UNTIL I DISABLED UAC.
THERE ARE ALMOST NO SOUND OPTIONS AND CHOICES IN VISTA. (AND WHO KNOWS WHAT OTHER OPTIONS)
THERE ARE MANY OTHER BAD THINGS I COULD POST ABOUT VISTA BUT LONG POSTS DON’T GET READ.
I HAVE SEEN NO BENEFITS AT ALL FROM VISTA, ONLY HEADACHE AND A MAJOR WASTE OF TIME.
TRUST ME WHEN I SAY, THE WORLD IS NOT READY FOR VISTA AND VISTA IS NOT READY FOR THE WORLD.
NEXT TIME YOU BUY A BRAND NEW COMPUTER, INSIST IT HAS WINDOWS XP.
JUST DO NOT BUY IT WITH VISTA UNLESS YOU ARE GOING TO WIPE IT CLEAN AND USE WINDOWS XP, PROVIDING IT IS ABLE TO EVEN RUN XP.
LONG LIVE WINDOWS XP AND LONG LIVE THE COMPUTERS ABLE TO RUN IT!!!!
~GARY
Hey I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but this is a place where people can voice their opinions, not get shot down by MS suck ups. I don’t mean to bash MS but I really don’t know how they managed to create such a suck of an operating system. I have the oportunity to work with computers at the geek squad at best buy and I also sell them in the computer department. The amount of computers coming back for sevice has tripled since the release of vista. ALL of them because of stupid crap, like the UAC pop ups, ignorant IE7 error messages that make no sense, and the simple fact that if you don’t have a dual core with at least a gig of memory your not going to run much more than home premium with no add ons ( such as virus protection in the background.)
Ok, ok sorry enough bashing thats is not where I’m taking this. I am trying to say that ALL of these problems can (or could have) been fixed from the beggining. People complain that there isn’t great software compatability with programs and that they are blaming 3rd party makers for not keeping up. Well, most people don’t know this but MS was sending crap code to begin with.
Ok for those who didn’t keep up with that lets make a small analagy… Take a bent car frame, build a drag racer around that and expect it to work flawlessly, no you have to start all the way from the begginging to make it right. This is what the 3rd parties are having trouble doing, they like the car mechanics are having to build from the beggining which is why its taking so long.
Yes vista will be the mainstay in about 3 years or so but it takes a good step first to to that, which MS has not done.
I am faithfully using xp pro/dual boot ubuntu right now and I refuse to use IE7.
Only surfing the web with firefox.
I do support open source software but I don’t believe that THIS will be the future of computers.
I personally don’t appreciate MS suck ups telling people to upgrade to vista when half of them don’t even really use vista yet.
Again like I said I work at best buy in two different departments dealing with computers and we have had more computers come in with vista in the past month than we have with ME.
People ask me if I can turn off the pop ups from UAC, yes I can but doing so, will pretty much cripple all security features of vista and if you use internet explorer your pretty much screwed without UAC.
Oh don’t even get me started on DRM or wait half of you don’t even know what that is or what it means.
Come back to the boards and argue with me once you’ve went to Barnes and Noble and read up on vista.
The only real reason why I even still use windows instead of a mac is because I am a gamer as well. I am really considering getting a mac because ”boot camp” will be able to run windows programs, such as Battlefeild 2142, and Half-life 2, just to name a few. But wait, When leopard comes out it will be able to run .exe files without the emulators. I wont even bother explaing to those who don’t know. All I can say is google is your friend.
Before I go any farther let me say this… I HATE MACS!!!! they are not user friendly, Sry mac users they aren’t.
Now then… I have had a chance to vent for a while and I appreciate those who have sat through my rant.
The last thing I can say after all the opinionated crap, For those who haven’t ugraded to vista I’m not going to tell you to not buy vista I am going to tell you simply, Do your homework first find out whether your c3180 Hp printer will or won’t work with your new operating system.
Don’t just listen to opinionated/biased things on a forum go talk to somebody who knows what the hell they are talking about, talk not to one person, talk not to just a MS guy, or just to a mac guy talk to multiple guys from both sides and decide for yourself, whether or not you want to upgrade to vista or not.
Thank you.
Tyson
Well tyson, mac may not be user freiendly in your opinion, but it is to most people, unless that is, you are using mac system 7 .
Well tyson, mac may not be user friendly in your opinion, but it is to most people, unless that is, you are using mac system 7 .
People are just giving into it because they think “newer is better”. What do I want out of a newer operating system? All I want is performance. Firewalls can be installed, I can secure my system without a message popping up every 10 minutes confirming that I’m now the world’s idiot for using Vista. How the GUI looks isn’t a factor for me, as long as it’s practical. These new “features” are mostly extra and updated programs. These aren’t operating system features, they’re something you should be able to download regardless.
Kids can post immature comments about how we’re all against Vista because we just like to whine. When XP was released, I actually liked it. It was an improvement over ME and 98. I didn’t like the way it looked (and I still don’t), but it performed on par with its previous version. Vista on the other hand is just a disappointment. It’s 3 years late, it took 5 years to develop, it was beta tested for over a year, and it just performs worse than XP. It’s not compatible with your old hardware or software, and that’s something that innovation should have taken care of. “It’s not optimized for hardware yet” is hardly an excuse, because this should have been the FIRST thing on Microsoft’s agenda, instead of playing around with pretty colors and fixing their network bugs. The thing is a bitch it configure now, I’m telling ya. I’m starting to forget what pictures I’m supposed to click on to configure a static IP address for my ethernet card. Its design isn’t intuitive. People shouldn’t have to re-learn something that they’ve been doing for years. Not only that, but even if you’re now used to Vista’s Control Settings, it still takes twice as long to get to the dialog you need.
I’m not an old timer, I just know what used to work, and obviously Microsoft has forgotten that.
Yes WIndows Vista is garbage. I’m not much of a super computer savvy consumer but I feel represent a large portion of computer literate users. I purchased a “Vista Ready” computer recently and then received my Vista software (which took 4 months). Long story short, I installed it, one of the video drivers did not install properly, I called to try and get it fixed and in order to fix it my hard drive was lost. I’ve reverted back to XP and will be demanding a refund for Vista crap.
I have a computer with vista and one with Windows XP.
I just stick with the XP one, because I can’t get used to the new vista ,
I just don’t like it.. so many bugs and new features. it gets confusing.
Think micorsoft neglected usibility and compatibility and are trying to hard to keep up with OS x, Linux and google…
Any windows just need 3 buttons that will fix the hole thing: 1. Disable all eyecandy 2. Disable all baloons 3. Disable all warnings
I think I will stick with Xp til I get a super computer to run this thing, With all the eye candy its just slowing down your computer.
Great write up!
windows vista is just a piece of junk. damn annoying. hate it. really2 not worth it. shit!
I am a system administrator and my boss bought a new laptop with Vista. He is a very technical user, but he asked me to figure out where to change the display settings (resolution, color depth) because he looked for it, and couldn’t find it right away.
I went to his desk thinking that I will pretend to be a non-technical user and see how intuitive it is to change the display settings. Went to Start, Control Panel and didn’t see the icon in there to change the display settings. I typed “Display settings”, “Screen resolution” and other such things in the search field in the Start menu… Nothing… No help article, nothing. I went to help and searched the Help… nothing…
So, we of course found where to change the settings, but I was amazed at how idiotically this OS was designed.
The esthetics aren’t good either. The overall look is shiny and nice, but the seams aren’t smooth, some icons still look crappy and it just gives you the feeling of a second-class product. That’s if you care that much for the eye candy.
I myself prefer functionality over eyecandy. Like, make the Trash Bin icon actually work, and make the time estimates for copying files more accurate before you decide that you will slow down the whole computer with visual MacOS X wannabe effects.
Another suggestion is: Windows Vista Minimal Edition, for people who just want to get the most out of their hardware, and everything to be responsive, and actually have CPU time and memory left for running powerful programs.
In my opinion, Vista is a failure, and it’s mind-boggling that Microsoft came up with something like this in all these years it was working on it.
This is the year 2007. It’s time the computer became personal again and working for you, not wasting your time.
Windows Vista is AWESOME.
I run it on a $350 dell with another $200 in memory and a video card, and it runs super-fast and looks great.
Stop whining that it won’t run on your pentium 3 with 128MB of ram
This one makes sence “One’s first step in wisdom is to kuesstion everything – and one’s last is to come to terms with everything.”
Windows Vista is a shit! It is just a copycat of Apple old versions of Macintosh
“Redmond has a cat too, a copycat”
Windows Vista is a vast improvement over Windows XP:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technical_features_new_to_Windows_Vista
The list may seem like meaningless technical details to most of you, but realize that the primary role of an operating system is to provide an environment to run applications. The new features in Vista provide a greatly enhanced platform for developing faster, more secure, more robust, more stable applications. Since its brand new, there are relatively few applications that take advantage of Vista’s new capabilities. When that next killer app comes out, it’s not because the programmers all of a sudden got a lot smarter. It’s because the hardware and operating systems have advanced to allow them to do stuff that was previously not feasible.
Unfortunately, most people judge an operating system on its superficial elements. Graphical UI elements and usability are important but they should not be the basis for objectively judging an operating system. These things are highly subjective and most complaints are often a simple training issue. It’s impossible to configure a system with default settings that will please all users.
Vista requires faster hardware and consumes more system resources because it’s doing a lot more than previous versions. This may seem inconvenient for some current systems and applications, but Vista wasn’t designed to make old systems run faster. It was designed to improve the framework so newer, better systems can be developed. It didn’t take Microsoft 5 years to build translucent window borders and sidebar gadgets. It took them 5 years to rewrite a significant portion of an aging platform that was in dire need upgrading. To say that Vista is “just another ME” or “Vista offers no improvements over XP” is simply not true.
“Mac fag doesn’t like Vista, more at 11.”
Anonymous creep posts shit on internet. Film at 11.
What do we see here? I load of Ani-Windows people.
Has any of you installed the final version of Windows Vista?
I have…. and I will say that I find it fater then XP did. Strange hey? Not really. Vista is new code. Not old code from early Windows. Since Microsoft had that black code leak onto the Internet, I can’t see them using that code again. And trust me, they haven’t. The OS is new! Not old crap!
You dont really need a super PC to run Vista. My PC has 1GB RAM, 3GHz CPU and 400GB hard drive. And its 5 years old. Okie, I have added up to 4GB of RAM but I would say 2GB of RAM is best. And hey RAM is cheap!
Most of my programs and games do run fine on Vista after some treaking here and there. And some of my games loads and even play much better than it did on XP!
There are also loads of new stuff in Vista. You just have to look deep for them.
If Vista does not work for you. Then you just have a really cheap and nasty PC that was never worth buying.
If you do have a good spec PC… give Vista and really explorer the OS!
When I purchaced my new system I was given a choice of having Vista or XP pre-installed. Because of all the things microsoft claimed Vista can do, I decided to go with Vista.
I am now regreating my choice and feel cheated. Many of my old programs can’t be run on Vista and custom settings are not easy. I have used most of Microsoft’s OS with the exception of Win 2000 and I think this is the worst OS they ever produce. This is the only OS that I have though of never using again.
Great plugin may be… Or not?
for all you Vista defenders i have only one thing to say to you-
you obviously do not need your precious CPU and Ram resources for anything useful. you must be internet wankers only.
Pro Audio is a JOKE on Vista- frequent glitches in the audio stream- regardless of the hardware (soundcards) tested
DRM bloat that wastes my valuable hardware just to disable itself because of Microsoft seeking to court Hollywood approval
Deliberate hobbling of hardware and the REQUIREMENT that drivers from vendors COMPLY or face the REVOCATION of certificates- resulting in hardware malfunctions in many cases- COMPLETELY caused by this crappy code.
MORE BLOATWARE. this thing is GARBAGE.
they ruined the decent explorer interface and made something USELESS to me anyway instead…
all candy and no dinner.
vista sucks IMHO.
ARE YOU LISTENING REDMOND?????
I found it cute that the article name is “4 Reasons Why….”
It should be “4000 Reaons Why Vista is a pile of microsoft wet hot curry fart!”
Nothing runs on it properly
Even after you get the drivers for thing to run properly… nothing runs properly.
It slowed the pre CS3 Adobe suit so so so so SO badly it was unusable
Keeping in mind im running a E6600 2 core duo with 2GB DDR2 and a 7900gtx with 512mb.
Nothing in the way of usb devices such as my motorola phone connect properly.
THe system crashes when i try to transfer files from my phone, on XP it works fine.
THe security pop ups are SO annoying… is actually asked if i trust the author of an app when the author was MICROSOFT!!!!!!!
It takes longer to boot up than XP.
I got the Home Premium for FREE as part of a learning promo being a retailer of the software… AND I REGRET INSTALLING IT!!!
Can’t go back to XP now without formatting so im stuck…
64 bit Vista is utter bullshit. Especially for gamers. Half life 2: Episode One keeps crashing on me, and the reason im not changing to xp is dx10… ME IS PISSED
No speed BOOST? More like Vista introduces a speed KILL. On my Acer aspire 5050 (I just got), Vista took an ass year to load. And doing relatively simple chores like copying a 65 mb home made avi from USB pen disk to HDD & Vice versa took me 3 minutes. WTF?! And on default, AVI files won’t run. And vids are CHOPPY as hell.
And seriously, did Microsoft pay a crackhead 2 dollars to design the new Vista interface? First, you have a plethora of programmes loading up on startup- and then a load more apps that block the apps that load up. I don’t think I understood that part at all.
OK. Vista has eye candy. I get the point. But sometimes, it’s flaunted to such proportions that the excess graphics FX (eye candy) becomes counter productive & irritating.
And backwards compatibility in Vista is attrociously piss ant poor. I couldn’t even get my modem drivers to install. When I pop the CD, Vista says “installing modem”- it even detects the hardware half way during install but after about 30 minutes of a hair pulling wait, I get a “hardware error” message and get chucked out.
I go on to access the device manager, and cannot even remove the faulty hardware! It just says “unknown device”- I’m neither able to uninstall or disable it!
Seriously, Vista is the biggest load of crocodile crap to grace a PC or a notebook, which is why I grabbed a copy of FIesty Fawn ASAP. Now, I can tell you’ I’m really happy with my laptop….and my PC.
here is one good why vista is the bomb=
DIRECTX 10!
any good game coming out will require it so why not upgrade
THIS WINDOWS VISTA SUCKS!
My toshiba laptop has Intel Core2Duo 1.6GHz
1GB DDR2 RAM
ATI Radeon Hyper Memory (256MB)
120 GB SATA Hard drive
Imagine, using the default windows photo gallery to view picture, it takes forever to load ang 4MB sized jpeg files?! *LOL* well actually, it loads for 2 minutes then it hangs! *LOL* WTF!?
while i have my desktop of lower specs running in XP, it loads flawlessly!
WTF?! *LOL*
One more thing, no backward compatibility in some applciations you will install! *LOL*
WARNING: DON’T DARE TO UPGRADE TO VISTA!!!!!!!!! VISTA SUCKS!!!!
Wow, this is a very “HOT” thread.
My opinion is, ALL OF YOU ARE RIGHT!
Vista is sucks, right, Vista is great, also right.
Mac is great, true, but Linux is also great.
In fact ALL OF THEM are SUCKS & GREAT
But it does depends on the user using it & what he/she is using it for.
Even the smallest knife can be a great weapon on the right hands.
I’ve used Linux, Windows (95, 98, ME, XP & Vista) & (currently using) Mac.
Vista, problems? of course guys, it’s a new born, remember how XP started? look at it now, still the most favorite OS of all time.
Security is always a problem for MS, because it is the MOST USED OS in the WORLD, of course it’s got a lot of enemies.
I often say, MS sucks, but guess what, i still need it and i kinda like it, even when i “hate” it. I have to use 3DSMax for my work, and it doesn’t run on Mac OS X (see one of the advatange of Windows? lots lots of Softwares, and no i don’t wanna waste my time learning some new 3D program for mac)
I like to point out an example of the SUCKS part, just one for each OS:
Windows Media Center, for God’s Sake, the name is MEDIA CENTER, but windows don’t give any codecs to play DVD, we have to buy the codec seperately (e.g. Nvidia Pure Decoder), what the hell???
Macintosh, you MUST buy new peripherals to make it OPTIMAL (e.g. all the ports are USBs, you gotta buy an USB Hub because there’s only 2 port in MacBook or the most annoying one, the line-in/mic-in doesn’t work if the mic don’t have any booster, so guess what? throw your old headset, and buy an USB one or get one with booster)
Remember guys, the bottom line is, THEY ARE ALL BUSINESS MAN, we as an end user, will have to pay, pay and pay, to get what we really really want.
So instead of you guys fighting for which one is better, why don’t you point out what should be fixed.
Afterall, in the end the ones who will use it is US!!! (and we’re paying for it also)
PS: Vista Ultimate, for $400, NOT WORTH IT, too darn expensive (it’s not like ALL the features is usable to us, we just need a lil’ bit from each)
Remember guys, this is just my opinion, everybody is entitled for an opinion right?
Long live Microsoft, long live Machintosh & long live Linux!
Ok, I will say that I agree with ” J7 ” (upside), of course they all have a good and bad part. Windows has a lot of sotware, Mac OSX was user friendly( to his user but not for me) and Linux is free(what a realy good advantages). So as a user, we have to think what we need, and what we can do with them. If you are a gamers, of course microsoft is a good one, if you do some graphic design so go with macs, but if budget is the case so go with linux. So everything is depent on what we need. Some said microsoft sucks, please be honest, it is the most used os in the world and you can see now, Macs is now ready for windows too, why?
Some said mac OSX is good, I agree, but is limited with software.
So plz be calm, and think what we need and then choose one.
I’ve read multiple articles and reviews. I’ve read through all your commentary. I’ve fiddled with Vista, including the advanced options and wireless network configuration systems. Yes, it’s spiffy looking. I’ve run dual boots with Windows and Linux systems. Blah blah blah.
That fact remains however, that Vista is slower than Windows XP on the same hardware. It’s unfortunate, because Vista was looking so beautiful in development, but it’s not living up to its hype. In a few years, after some patches and Service Packs, I’m fairly sure it’ll be the new standard. Right now it falls short of Windows XP Pro by leaps and bounds.
Honestly, it can’t even provide the same graphics effects on screensaver transitions that other Operating Systems can on the exact same machine. This really should be proof enough for the inadequacies of Windows Vista, but then we have the new rating system for determining what Vista believes the hardware is capable of. For anyone who has ever tweaked system performance beyond what it’s rated at, this very concept is absurd.
I can’t say I love Microsoft, but I am a Windows user primarily because of ease of use for my clients. Unfortunately, Windows Vista has taken an easy to use OS and made it “idiot proof” to the point of being user-proof. It’s not a work-station OS. You do have to be a nerd to get the OS running the way your clients need it to. Windows XP Pro is still the way to go, while Windows Vista still has a ways to go development-wise.
“In fact ALL OF THEM are SUCKS & GREAT”
a great opinion
I’ve always been a fanboy of new Windows OS’s until Windows Vista came out. It continuosly froze by computer, so I ended up formatting my drive and installing Windows XP again.
I have just bought a new Vostro 1700 with all the trimmings, a great machine, with one draw back…WINDOWS VISTA…what a monumental piece of utterly utterly unnecessary junk. i have never worked with such an unstable pile of crap……..XP will be going on in the next few days.
C’mon Gates…what are you playing at.
To the poster that made the comment about Photoshop not being “in Linux”. Um . . . . . actually thats not true, im using it right now in xubuntu Linux installed natively through WINE, and it actually runs smoother than it ever has for me in Windows XP. MS Office runs much faster in it too.
I can use alot of windows programs in Linux through Crossover and WINE, the games actually look and feel considerably smoother than they do running in windows, which is rather strange but cool nonetheless.
Oh and um . . . . . all you people out there that love windows and think its a great OS. You all might stop to consider something, ever wonder why defragging is not done hardly ever at all in Linux, let ya in on a hint (its because the filesystem is designed to be a hell of alot more efficient than an NTFS filesystem).
I can sit in photoshop all day long and move huge ass art files around back and fourth and delete things left and right, and guess what, my computer doesnt slow down a bit or skip a beat. Gee I cant help but wonder sometimes, when the idiots at Microsoft are going to wake up and realize just how inefficient Vista really actually is.
If I sit in windows and do that same thing with photoshop, after about 2 hours my computer will slow down to a crawl and then after that shit all over itself resulting in a hard and nasty reboot when everything gets so slow that it just finally freezes or takes 30 minutes to open a window up, which is utterly ridiculous. Yet in Linux, 9 hours later, it is still trucking along, and photoshop is as fast as ever, the OS is just as responsive as when I booted the machine up 72 hours before that 9 hour period photoshop was started, so you tell me? . . . . . hmm a bit odd is it not. Me thinks so
ther are a lot of useful PhotoShop alternatives for linux , and VISTA OMG i’ve tried it twice it’s horrible
Vista is windows ME with a paint job! Its just like windows ME in every way possible just looks nicer thats it. Nothing but problems they should have named it Windows ME Second Edition…..garbage!!!
Then you have those clowns that defend vista just remember those are the same kind of clowns thats also said windows ME was awsome and great…’works flawless’ LMAO… what junk
I am happy I upgraded to Vista.
My job is that I am a computer tech. I do everything from change hardware to software troubleshooting.
Now I won’t claim to be the savviest or most experienced tech. And being not-that-rich, I have not made any upgrades to vista. I’m still chopping away on my bargain-bin Celeron M Dell because of the headaches I’ve encountered with my wife’s new laptop which had Vista Home Premium.
Here are some observations that I have made, though…and these are from personal use with Vista.
1) I have had very few vista systems come in to the office that had any malware/virus problems. So it might well be said that security is better. But the compatibility, on the other hand, is a different ballgame. It is almost ALWAYS hardware/driver/software compatibility related issues that we have to resolve.
2) Networking…it may not always be this way, but it was a royale pain in the ass to install a “vista certified” printer as a network printer for a customer this week. In fact, vista would not do the standard network printer installation — I had to manually install the printer and then manually change the port to the \\server\printer name…and even then, it was slow as get out…I waited for (no joke) just under and hour for it to finally complete the printer setup. And this was a brand new Acer laptop with 2GB RAM Core 2 Duo blah blah blah.
3)DirectX 10 …okay, yeah it’s cool. Yeah, it is the next generation gaming software. I don’t contest that. And yes, gamers, perhaps Vista will be the only DX10 platform, at least for a while, but did it ever occur to you that all of the loose ends in windows vista means that microsoft is making you upgrade to a very crappy, shoddy platform in order to get it? It’s like … yes you get a jewel. But it is cemented to the inside wall of a septic tank. It’s a have-to, but it still sucks. Microsoft made it that way, too. DirectX 10, great. Now let’s break our toes every day to use it, because we have no choice but to get Vista if we want DirectX 10.
4) My wife also had a brand new laptop which had Vista… 1GB DDR2, Athlon 64 x2 and Nvidia graphics (256MB of dedicated memory). Even on the lower resolution/detail settings, she [constantly] had problems both in regular use and with games…driver issues, mouse jumps, hesitation even when typing simple text. It was not virus/malware related performance issues, it was simply just vista and all of its many issues, or for that matter, [possible] issues. I encountered VERY similar problems on other vista systems, especially laptops. We uninstalled all of the junky manufacturer software, removed the Anti-virus, stopped the processes that were the most memory-heavy and I was very disappointed to see that it did not help her problem [at all].
We reformatted to Windows XP Pro and the difference is way more than noticeable. To see how quickly her machine will now boot is absolutely absurd compared to Vista’s boot time. I mean, yes, I can expect a longer boot time for an OS like Vista that requires more resources and all, but this was just WAY too much. Way too LONG. It was frustrating.
Finally, I guess in closing I would say that I don’t think the problem with Vista is lack of features. Yes it has many good features. But what good are features if you can’t even use them smoothly? What good is an OS if it makes using your computer a total pain in the ass? That’s the whole point of an OS…to make things easier…to move things along. Vista, I am sorry, just doesn’t do this. Maybe it will get better with more patches, updates and fixes…but right now it is awful and it seems like no one is doing anything about it. Even the patches that [are] offered to help the compatibility issues and whatnot sometimes don’t even work.
From what I understand, in a month or two dell won’t even offer Windows XP on any more of their systems. Which really is the same as just about everyone. I can’t remember the last time I saw an XP system…even Media Center Edition. I say this because this will be hell for us here at the shop. Everyone will HAVE TO buy vista when they buy a new computer, and they WILL experience MANY problems.
All in all, vista looks very stylish. That’s about all I’ve really liked about it so far. It has been nothing but a pain in the ass for me with [any] experience I’ve had.
Bullsh**. Mac is gaining ground every day. A new classy interface for a failing OS such as windows isn’t going to be able to cover it’s own arse in the near future. I think MAC is doing the right thing. They’re not going all out is advertising, but they’re def letting people know there’s an alternative OS from windows..
Here is my reason not to use VISTA it will make that Gates twat another billion
so he can then invest it in F**King us over again and again.
The other is I cant download it and use for free! HEHE!
Alleagra, shut the f**k up people like you like to be seen as smart and you probs are the biggest twat around.
Kiss my ass to all corporate bastards and their brown nosers!
Get a life muppets stop trying to be so PC! on you PC!
I find it really frustrating that Microsoft now considers my 4 year old PC a piece of junk. Because if it were to run Vista it would be a piece of junk.
So, I use Linux – not one of all those hardcores but I do. If I were to use Windows, I’d go for XP. I agree that there is nothing that you cannot do in XP that can be done in Vista. Vista just sucks. The worst OS ever made.
Wine is a very good simulator of windows. not for cracking Windows. If it’s passes WGA it just shows weakness of WGA.
Microsoft is full of bitches. Screw Windows Vista.
