5 Online Video Sites For Both TV Shows & Movies

October 21, 2008 Apple, Reviews 1 Comment

Right on the heels of my last post about how I ditched cable for internet only video comes a quick list of five sites that let you follow in my footsteps and get both TV shows and movies online. Most folks who are currently stuck with cable or satellite TV might not realize that so much content is now available online but after checking out these sites they might just change their minds. There are literally thousands of movies and just about every major show online for free and the rest will only cost you about $2 per episode to own. So get the popcorn and put your feet up (in front of your computer) and enjoy some of the best programming the internet can offer…

5. veoh – Another good streaming media site, veoh features mostly TV shows and some video clips but has overall a decent selection. Perhaps the best feature of this site is the page where all the shows are organized by alphabet which makes finding something to watch quick and easy. Beyond that the site is average and the quality of the videos seems slightly less than the competition but when there is nothing else “on” I tend to find myself checking out the latest on veoh.

4. IMDb Video – This one took me by surprise since I only discovered it recently and never expected to see full length movies and TV Shows from this site. Although it does look like much of the content is from Hulu there are some real classic gems to be found here. Definitely worth a look if you like classic TV and movies.

3. Amazon Video On Demand – Almost as easy to use as iTunes Amazon has created a fantastic service with a wide selection of shows and movies that you can stream right from their web site. Quality is great (seems near-HD for most shows) and since there is no waiting to download you get to watch right away. Another bonus is that the content you purchase is stored on Amazon’s servers so you don’t need to worry about losing something due to a failed hard drive with the downside being the inability to add your own content to the playlist.

2. Apple iTunes – If you are looking for the one-stop-chop-shop of online video services to replace your cable TV service then iTunes is the one to jump into. Although most of the content is pay-to-play you can still find plenty of super high quality content for free (podcasts and free TV shows) to satisfy the urge for just “something to watch”. Where iTunes really shines is in two areas; content quality (only service with a large selection of HD content right now) and ease of use in non-computing environments like the iPod. One huge plus for iTunes is the ability to purchase an AppleTV which allows you to directly connect your fancy HD TV and watch both streaming content and whatever you purchase at the iTunes store. The one big downside to iTunes is that you have to use the iTunes software to browse, download, and watch video vs. just streaming it from a web site.

1. Hulu – I really wanted to list iTunes as the number one choice thanks to their huge selection but when it comes to having great shows online at decent to great quality you just can’t beat Hulu. Especially when you consider that the entire service is free. Most of the content is in SD/Digital format with a few HD mixed in and the flash-based player works great even on my 100″ projector screen! My only real gripe is that most shows only keep the current episodes online rather then the entire catalog of past seasons and content seems to change without warning. Hulu really shines if you like to channel surf since the interface is a snap to use and makes finding content easy.
