BMW 335i Mini-Review

March 29, 2007 Featured, Reviews 2 Comments

Right on the heels of my BMW 328xi review comes this rare chance to sample something truly special. Yes, there is nirvana and no it’s not a rock band. For BMW enthusiasts it can be found in the drivers seat of the 2007 BMW 335i thanks to the technological tour-de-force that is BMW’s latest enterprising twist in automotive engineering, twin turbo power. Sadistically fast but sporting deceptively benign looks, the 335i marks itself as one of the sneakiest cars on the road, fooling everyone into thinking you are driving just another 3-Series, until you step on the accelerator that is.

Plantronics Discovery 640 Bluetooth Headset Mini-Review

March 7, 2007 Reviews 1 Comment

Discovery640 After trying several bluetooth headsets from Motorola I picked up the Plantronics Discovery 640 while cruising through Best Buy one day almost as an after thought. I was not particularly impressed with my last headset, the Motorola H500 since it never seemed to provide the clarity or the comfort I was looking for. So after several weeks using my Plantronics bluetooth headset I was not only happy with it, I finally started actually using it for just about all my cell calls since the quality was better on the headset than using the phone itself!

Apple Airport Extreme 802.11n Mini-Review

February 20, 2007 Reviews 4 Comments

Airportextreme 90X80 070109 It’s no secret Apple has had an incredible year full of successful product releases starting with the dramatic move to Intel processors taking center stage and finally with the eagerly awaited iPhone announcement. Now that all Mac platforms and I suspect even the iPhone have made the jump to Intel Apple has taken the time to release two very innovative products, the new Airport Extreme and AppleTV. Since AppleTV has yet to make it to store shelves the focus of this review will be the absolutely wonderful wireless router/basestation that now carries the name Airport Extreme. It is very important to understand that these two products are interrelated in that you really need to have the Airport Extreme if you intend to make the most of the new AppleTV’s built-in wireless. In addition to the great features supported by the new Airport design we will also focus on the bigger picture, Apple’s slow march into the living room and what that means for established media distribution channels.

2007 Mercedes-Benz C230 Sport Mini-Review

February 11, 2007 Featured, Reviews 10 Comments

2007.Mercedesbenz.Cclass.20097618-T So what’s a BMW fan like myself doing reviewing a Mercedes? Well, like the old saying goes “know thy enemy” and as far as rivalries go, BMW and Mercedes are one of the most well known. Although Mercedes-Benz answer to the latest BMW 3-series is still several months away the current C-class is no slouch. Offered in two separate versions dubbed Sport and Luxury this sedan attempts to please all drivers ultimately resulting in a very difficult decision when it comes time to make a purchase. For this mini-review I had the chance to once again spend some time in the driver’s seat, this time behind the wheel of a 2007 Mercedes-Benz C230 Sport. So how did the C230 stack up? Not bad, although performance junkies might want to look elsewhere this Mercedes does offer a healthy dose of luxury for a fantastic price.

2007 BMW 328xi Mini-Review

February 10, 2007 Featured, Reviews 1 Comment

241574 Once in a while a car comes along that changes your perceptions on just what an automobile should be. For myself that car was a 2000 BMW 328i that I had the opportunity to own and enjoy for several years. The car impressed me so much I have been a BMW owner ever since. So when the opportunity came up to take the keys to a brand new 2007 328xi (the all-wheel-drive version) for a few days I simply could not resist. So after spending the weekend with BMW’s latest rendition of the legendary 3-series do I still think of the 328i as the best sport sedan I have ever driven? You bet, not only does this new BMW drive like a wet dream on wheels but it combines just the right amount of creature comfort with sporty goodness to please even the die hard enthusiasts while still pampering the Sunday driver.

Panasonic Widescreen MiniDV Digital Camcorder PV-GS59 Mini-Review

January 6, 2007 Reviews No Comments

7605852 Ra As I am sure many of you can remember the early days of the camcorder, with over-the-shoulder clunky VHS units that were painful to use and had less-than stellar video quality. Flash forward to today with just about everything on the market being digital and with HD handheld cameras now priced under $1000 it is truly a great time to buy if you find yourself in the market for a new camcorder. But what if you just want sometime simple and cheap but still digital quality? That’s where I found myself recently, in the market for an inexpensive easy to use but still good quality digital video camera. Thankfully I quickly discovered that there are many choices in the sub-$400 range and even some good choices in the sub-$300 range for miniDV digital camcorders. These units won’t wow you with picture quality but they do a very decent job when compared to past camcorders. The camcorder that I picked out ended up being the Panasonic PV-GS59 which is a very small widescreen miniDV unit that can be had for under $300 and has everything you need for basic recording.

Compaq Presario V6101 Mini-Review

January 1, 2007 Reviews No Comments

37618776 As far as entry-level notebook computers go the Comapq Presario V6101US (V6000 Series) is not too shabby. Having picked one up through a “doorbuster” sale back during the Thanksgiving rush I thought I would share my impressions, including how Microsoft’s latest OS Windows Vista performs on this system. Featuring a AMD Sempron processor and 512mb ram the V6101US shows it’s true colors as a budget notebook right away. Although video is provided by a Nvidia Go 6150 display adapter I definitely was not expecting any real video performance due to the use of shared system memory with the video controller. All things aside, I ended up being pleasantly surprised with the overall performance of the notebook and find it a very usable piece of equipment.

iPod Shuffle Mini-Review

December 31, 2006 Reviews No Comments

Specsdimensions20060912 Ok, I know what are thinking. Why even bother to review an iPod, everyone already has one! In the case of the latest iPod shuffle I just could not resist! By far one of the coolest gadgets to hit the market this year the new iPod Shuffle fixes all the wrongs done by the previous version of this tiny mp3 player. About the size of a book of matches, this tiny music machine gives all the power of an iPod but in a size that makes it easy just clip it on and go.

LG Fusic LX-550 Mini-Review

December 31, 2006 Reviews 4 Comments

Lx550 M F M These days you can never get enough features in cell phones. It sure seems like each new handset on the market has something new that then becomes the must-have thing for the next several months. The LG Fusic stakes claim to being the first clamshell flip-phone with an FM transmitter built-in. This little feature lets you listen to MP3s on any FM radio provided you tune in to the frequency used by the Fusic. In additon to the FM transmitter you get a decent quality handset that also features stereo Bluetooth, a microSD card slot, changable faceplates, and high speed EVDO internet access. All things considered, this phone really has a ton of great features at a fair price.

Dirt Devil Kone Hand Vac Mini-Review

December 18, 2006 Reviews No Comments

Dustbuster-Kone So I was walking through Target the other day and saw this hand-vac and I just had to have it. It just looks so cool, and was a perfect solution to fix some of the Roomba’s shortcomings. At only $39 I figured I would give it a try since I really needed a small hand vac and hated how most of the traditional ones looked. Once I got home and tried it out I made a very interesting discovery, this little hand vac rocks. Seriously, it can get into all the little nooks and crannies that my Roomba can’t and this little vac has serious power.

Ditching Cable TV Service – One Year Later

October 20, 2008

Let me just get right to the point and say that ditching the $75+ per month Cable TV service over one year ago and going solely with online video offerings was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Seriously. I don’t miss the crappy reality shows, nor do I miss the jamming of [...]

Yet Another Reason Why eBay Is A Total Joke

January 28, 2007

I can’t believe eBay is still in business considering the huge number of scams that seem to pervade the site like flies on you-know-what. Just this past week I attempted to use eBay to auction off two notebook computers and quickly discovered that this was an impossible task thanks to all the scammers who now [...]
